Sustainable development and recycling

The Advisory Committee on Business and the Environment (ACBE) has issued a draft director's briefing paper on sustainable development. The draft guide helps directors to assess how sustainable development is being addressed within their business and encourages the internalisation of those issues. The paper is available from environment@kpmg.co.uk.

The DETR has published a consultation document to decide the recovery and recycling targets for 2001 under the Producer Responsibility Obligations (Packaging Waste) Regulations 1997.

If your firm uses or imports more than 50 tonnes of packaging each year and turns over more than £2m, then it is affected by these regulations (see Facilities Management Legal Update Vol.3, Iss.4 for more detail on the current regulations). The regulations set out the percentage of packaging waste used by an organisation that must be recovered and recycled.

The DETR is inviting comments on the consultation paper. For more information please email Paul McKinney - paul_mckinney@detr.gsi.gov.uk (England), John Convery - waste.team@scotland.gov.uk (Scotland) or Gareth Williams - gareth.williams@wales.gsi.gov.uk (Wales).
