Nortel Networks brings wireless Internet to office

Corporate customers of GSM operators will soon be able to access the company intranet as well as the Internet from a single, mobile device with an innovative Internet Protocol (IP) based wireless office solution from Nortel Networks Nortel Networks.

announced at the GSM World Congress in Cannes that it has added IP capability to the Nortel Networks PicoNode in-building solution for GSM service. This includes a full IP layer, supporting local area network (LAN) connectivity for packetised voice and data traffic.

"Adding IP to the Nortel Networks PicoNode offers corporations a highly cost-effective way to adapt to the Internet business model," says Phil Terrett, director, product marketing, Nortel Networks. "The new IP layer will enable employees to use their GSM phones, or in the future any wireless devices, to connect to the GSM network, intranet or Internet, wherever they happen to be. Considering the immense number of applications which will come onto the market in the near future, this will offer a wealth of high-value services for corporate users."

The Nortel Networks PicoNode incorporates a base transceiver station, a base station controller and a mobile switching centre into a single cabinet slightly larger than a personal computer. It provides GSM call switching, near landline-quality voice service and integrated PBX features in a compact package suitable for corporate environments. The PicoNode can switch traffic locally when deployed in a private network, reducing traffic on the public GSM network, and resulting in substantial cost savings and superior call quality.
