McDonough has led the development of Johnson Controls integrated facilities management business across Europe, Middle-East and Africa, including involvement in private finance projects and in the provision of a range of integrated solutions for the outsourcing market.

Previously MD at Johnson Controls IFM, McDonough moved into a European role when Don Kenny took over the managing director position earlier this year.

McDonough joined Johnson Controls in 1991 as UK Managing Director, Automotive Systems Group from Massey Ferguson. A year later he was appointed vice president, European Operations, ASG, and four years later, vice president, Asia Pacific, ASG, before becoming vice president, Integrated Facilities Management, EMEA.

Carillion, demerged from Tarmac in July last year, gave a commitment to separate the roles of chairman and chief executive by the time of next year’s AGM. The company is looking to McDonough to accelerate its strategy to “generate a growing stream of more visible and predictable earnings through the development of its service-related businesses of private finance, infrastructure management and integrated facilities management.”

Although Carillion will continue to develop its construction activities on a selective basis it has grown service-related activities to the point where they will soon contribute around half the company’s operating profit.

Commenting on the appointment, Sir Neville Simms, said: “I am delighted that John McDonough will be joining us as our new Chief Executive. It is clear that he has the experience to lead Carillion forward in the next phase of its development and growth and he will clearly be a valuable addition to our strong senior management team.”
