Construction starts on new City home for Scottish Widows

Construction of a new 20,000 sq m (215,000 sq ft) office scheme at Athene Place, in the City of London, has commenced. The new £25 million development, designed by EPR Architects for Scottish Widows, consists of two 9 storey wings linked by lifts and a central atrium overlooking the newly designed Athene Place. Completion is expected in early 2002.

Gregory Craig, managing director of EPR Architects, said: "Our design sets out to fulfill the need for new quality office space but places equal importance on the re-modelling of Athene Place as an attractive addition to the City's intimate open spaces, which we hope will be enjoyed by people who work around and pass through it."

Project manager is Jones Lang LaSalle, the contractor Sir Robert McAlpine, structural engineers Whitby & Bird, M&E engineers Hilson Moran and the quantity surveyor, Northcroft Neighbour & Nicholson.
