Skanska wins its first schools PFI

Skanska Construction has won its first educational PFI for the London Borough of Newham, worth £23m. Working as part of the Norwich Union Public Private Partnership Fund (NUPPP) consortium, Skanska will design and build three new schools on green field sites in the borough.

The secondary school in Beckton will accommodate 1,500 pupils, and the two primary schools in Plaistow 480. Design and construction work is due to be completed by summer 2003.

Chesterton Workplace Management will provide facilities management for 25 years through the consortium. This follows the Ericsson FM contract the company won earlier this year, working with Skanska in the Matrix Facilities Management joint venture (see News story). Skanska is also currently involved in a £340m refurbishment programme for the Ministry of Defence at its Whitehall offices in London.
