More on disability law: government calls in the BBC

Yesterday, i-FM reported that major charities have exposed many UK businesses as unprepared for the October 1st deadline for compliance with the Disability Discrimination Act.

To put its own house in order, the Department of Trade and Industry has now turned to the BBC for a software fix that will make its websites accessible to people with sight problems.

'Betsie' - BBC Education Text to Speech Internet Enhancer - converts HTML material to text in large fonts and is being supplied free to the DTI.

A number of other government departments are apparently looking at it with considerable interest.
