  Husbands and teleworkers

A new report by the Institute for Employment Studies concludes that of the 1.1 million teleworkers in the UK today, 70% are men. This demolishes the stereotype that the majority of homeworkers are women with children.

The findings also confirm the results of the SI CBX survey concerning teleworkers, which can be read here on i-FM by clicking here.

The IES study found that 60% of men teleworking are actually on the move using a virtual office with home as the base. They are most likely to be professionals from the financial and business services industries, and typically move into teleworking in mid-career. The great majority work full-time.

Report author Ursula Huws notes that at 1 million, teleworkers account for about 5% of the UK's working population. She estimates that numbers are growing at about 200,000 each year.
