Maxwell StephensHelp create a world class
environment for this important National Academy
The
Academy of Medical Sciences is an independent charity that represents the
spectrum of medical science – from basic research through clinical application
to healthcare delivery. Our vision is to improve health through research.
Our
elected Fellows – over 1000 – are central to our success. It is their diversity
of talent, collective experience and professionalism that enables the Academy
to address complex issues of science and healthcare with authority. The
Fellowship is a national public resource of independent and expert advice on
medical science and healthcare and has become the first port of call for
government when seeking advice on healthcare policy.
Facilities at the
Academy
In
October 2010 the Academy of Medical Sciences moved to newly refurbished
premises at 41 Portland Place, London following a successful £5 million
fundraising appeal. The six storey, Grade II* listed building built circa 1770
and modern Mews House (total 17,000 sq ft), provides a headquarters for the
Academy that has its offices on two floors. A premier conference venue and
catering business operates from the heritage meeting rooms on the ground and
first floors. Surplus office space on the top floors has been leased to a
charity tenant.
Overview of the Role
The
Facilities Manager will be responsible for managing this beautiful building and
support services of the Academy at its headquarters at 41 Portland Place to a
first class standard and to provide excellent customer service to all users of
the building including Academy staff, office tenants, conferencing contractors
and external visitors.
The Opportunity
In
this role you will be responsible for taking ownership of FM issues,
specifically managing the hard and soft services of the building. You will provide
5* services to office users of the building (Academy staff and tenants), whilst
supporting the conferencing contractors in delivering first class accommodation
and IT/AV services to external clients, with health and safety compliance
underpinning all activities.
The
Facilities Manager supervises a part time Facilities Assistant and is often the
sole facilities representative on site at any time, so the role is “hands on”.
The
service streams under your control will include: Management of building and
plant, Management of support services, Security,
Switchboard/Reception/Telephones, Storage and archives, AMS office management,
IT and AV equipment, Furniture and equipment, Health and Safety, Co-ordination
with catering and conferencing team, Tenants, Finance and budgeting.
Person Specification
This
is a challenging role which requires a degree of commercial acumen and well
developed management, communication and leadership skills. You will play a key
role in the Academy, which will require a track record in a similar role,
having supervised staff and managed budgets. You will need to be enthusiastic
and motivated around your team and as an individual you will be resourceful,
with a “can do” attitude and taking pride in your work. You will enjoy being away from your desk as
the role requires that you are “hands on” and it would help if you were
competent with IT and AV equipment.
