Case Study:
In 2009, Amey’s Built Environment team began work on the Asset Management and Facilities Management Contract for Heathrow Express (HEx) - the fastest, most frequent way to travel between Heathrow Airport and Central London.
 
The contract is worth £4.5 million per year and requires Amey to provide an array of hard and soft services.
 
At the commencement of the contract, we were tasked with restoring a pleasant ambience at the HEx station. After 12 years of heavy use (16,000 people use the service everyday), the floor had become ingrained with dirt, and the operation of the HEx trains had left the station tiles stained.
 
This intensive cleaning project ran for 8 weeks during which time the team used passenger flow management techniques to ensure the experience of the passenger was maintained, whilst allowing us to conduct 24 hour cleaning of the tiles. This reduced the time of the project to only 8 weeks and resulted in a 30% reduction in the cost of project. 
 
We have also identified further efficiencies by introducing more effective cleaning machines, which use ec-H2O technology. These require 70% less water and clean more floor area. Coupled with customised cleaning tasks and remapped cleaning solutions based on area usage and customer perception, the savings delivered in the first year of the contract were £50,000, with a predicted £100,000 savings per year going forward.
